Kura Revolving Sushi Bar has set the Opening Date(s) for their Cherry Hill location, with the soft opening set for this Saturday October 19th, and the formal Grand Opening to start on Tuesday October 22nd.

For the three Grand Opening dates of Tues-Thurs there are a variety of promos and giveaways including discounted sushi plates. Check Facebook post for details

The location for the new Kura Sushi is in the Marketplace at Garden State Park complex on Route 70, with the new sushi restaurant situated in the buildings in front of Wegmans (next to the Philadelphia Eagles Pro Shop).

I stopped in today to meet up with local management and to get a preview look at the innovative “nowhere else in South Jersey” restaurant. 42Freeway was the first to report on plans for this Kura location back in January, and in July I shared an update.

If you’re unfamiliar with what a ”revolving sushi bar” is… Well you’ve likely seen videos online of sushi restaurants in Japan with a conveyor belt that’s winds throughout the dining area, bringing plates of freshly made sushi directly to the tables.

Well that’s exactly what Kura is all about… and in fact with over 500 locations globally they are the leaders in this style of sushi restaurant.

And in just a few days Cherry Hill will have its own Kura Revolving Susi Bar!

As mentioned I was in the restaurant today and got to see the full design… which is beautifully styled to make you feel like it was transported directly from downtown Tokyo. Attractive with a big dose of Japanese hi-tech whimsy.

The seating at Kura Cherry Hull is booth style, and positioned so that each dining table has the conveyor belt moving past it on the one end.

The layout of the restaurant obviously had to be designed to consider the conveyor belt moving past all of the tables, so the space is setup like fingers… each of those fingers having booths on either side, as the conveyor belt moves down each row and then back again… weaving in and out.

Remember as a kid how you would draw a thanks giving turkey by tracing your outstretched fingers with a pencil? Well.. it’s something like that!

Overall it’s not a large restaurant and you could expect for the first few weeks (months) the new Kura is going to be a very popular place for people to try out… initially for the unique hi-tech serving mechanisms… and of course becoming fans of Kura’s amazing sushi!

But honestly I would expect the restaurant to have a high throughput of customers (“table turnover”) as the whole design of the restaurant order/serving process is so automated and streamlined, you likely won’t find yourself waiting around much at the table!

Consider that sushi is constantly moving on the conveyor belt, and you can use the computer screen at each table to order whatever you want.

Kura even uses a robot server to bring your drink orders over to your table!

I almost wonder if you can progress through your entire meal, pay your bill and leave… without ever really needing a Kura employee at your table!

Each table also features a overhead digital display screen as well as a gachapon dispenser. Gachapon are small toys or trinkets that are inside a hollow plastic ball. At Kura, after a certain amount of sushi dishes ordered, the dispenser delivers a gachapon ball to your table!

In my visit today the entire restaurant’s construction was fully complete, but they are loading up inventory now so boxes were in several places of the restaurant and I wasn’t able to get the full, wide dining room shot… but I was allowed to take a few highlight photos.

I mentioned the robot beverage server that Kura uses and off to the side I saw it being readied for the opening!

The coolest thing to see during my visit is that conveyor belt was actually in motion while I was there, moving the domed sushi plates around the restaurant!

So just a little better explanation on the process of ordering at Kura. I’ve learned recently that there are actually two different conveyor belts.

The main ordering process and conveyor belt that you see on social media is that the sushi chefs are constantly making different sushi entrees, which they put into the domed plates and place on the conveyor belt.

As the sushi moves past your table, if you’re interested in it you just take it off the conveyor belt.

You don’t have to place an order, or tell anybody what you’re doing!

Your bill is created when you return the plates, which is done by sliding each plate through a slot which is at each table. At that point a code on the plate is scanned and the item is added to your bill.

So what happens if you want a particular style of sushi, but it seems it’s not making its way down the belt to your table?

You can use the digital screen to pick whatever it is you want, and that’s where the second conveyor belt comes into play.

Your requested order is sent to the kitchen where the chefs make your specific request, And place it on the second conveyor belt… which is fully computerized to bring that dish directly to your table!

I am excited to try Kura and their conveyor belt delivered sushi, and I will be back soon!
